Mac’s New Collection – Mexican-Chic or Tacky and Cheap?

Every year MAC comes out with several collections intended to tempt and intrigue potential buyers, and this year is no different. This year, MAC has teamed up with fashion-house Rodarte for a collection inspired by Juarez, Mexico.  The new collection will feature blush, lip gloss, eyeshadows and nail polish in shades titled “Factory,” “Juarez,” “Ghost town,” “del Norte,” and “Quinceanera.”  According to ColorLines, designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy were inspired by the “lines of women workers who’d make their way to factory jobs in the middle of the night.” The problem is, Juarez is less than romantic.  Juarez is one of the world’s deadliest cities, with thousands of unsolved deaths a year, mostly women who were on their way to and from work.

MAC has been getting a lot of flack for the new collection, and rightfully so if I may say.  Glamorizing a city known for the rape and murder of thousands of women a year (6,000 so far THIS YEAR) is irresponsible.  But let’s not bash MAC too soon.  In a statement released to blog Temptalia, a MAC spokesperson says:

Want a Minx Manicure Without the High Cost?

Back in 2008, I told you all about Minx, the revolutionary film that adheres to nails without chemicals or glue. Minx is all the rage with top celebrities, like Rihanna and Beyonce, and until now, was only available to big city girls with fat pockets.  Thanks to Sephora, you now can get your own Minx Manicure for a fraction of the cost.

Introducing Sephora by OPI’s Chic Print for Nails, created by Minx.  The new line boasts fierce patterns and prints to satisfy your wildest mani-and-pedi dreams. Dress your tips with your favorite design: anchor, stars, checkers, tiger, fishnet, chrome lace, black & gold geometric, or skulls.

How to use Minx: Each set of Chic Print for Nails contains 16 nail patches of varying widths, for a one-time application to fingers or toes. The nail patch is a solid-film material with an adhesive back that is heat activated. Applying heat creates conformability, allowing the patch to fit over the compound curves of your nails and seal onto the nail bed. The patent-pending material removes easily with heat.

Where to find it: Sephora, of course, for $15!

I especially dig the Anchor and Fishnet styles, shown below.  What do you think? Will you be racing to Sephora for your very own Minx Manicure?

Shu Uemura is Closing All U.S. Stores!

It’s a sad day for Shu lovers.  L’Oreal USA has announced its decision to close its U.S. operations for Shu Uemura cosmetics.  Shu Uemura is a Japanese brand created in 1983 and named after its namesake make-up artist.  The brand is well known for its false eyelashes, vivid colors, and superior make-up tools.

“Shu Uemura is a unique and vibrant brand, but it represents a very small part of our luxury business,” Carol Hamilton, president of L’Oréal USA’s luxury division, said in a statement.  “We decided that L’Oréal USA would be better served by focusing on our other strategic luxury brands like Lancôme, Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, Kiehl’s and fragrances.”

If you’re a Shu loyalist, don’t fret! You can continue to buy products online at www.shuuemura.com. Shu Uemura will continue its expansion in other parts of the world where it has seen significant growth and success.

Beauty DON’T: Driving While Shaving Your Um, Area

We’ve all heard the dangers of applying makeup in the car while driving to work, but I never thought anyone would go THIS far.  According to CBS news in Chicago, a woman in Florida caused a two-car crash on a highway while shaving her bikini area. According to Trooper Gary Dunick, Barnes said she was meeting her boyfriend in Key West and wanted to be “ready for the visit.”
