Mac’s New Collection – Mexican-Chic or Tacky and Cheap?

Every year MAC comes out with several collections intended to tempt and intrigue potential buyers, and this year is no different. This year, MAC has teamed up with fashion-house Rodarte for a collection inspired by Juarez, Mexico.  The new collection will feature blush, lip gloss, eyeshadows and nail polish in shades titled “Factory,” “Juarez,” “Ghost town,” “del Norte,” and “Quinceanera.”  According to ColorLines, designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy were inspired by the “lines of women workers who’d make their way to factory jobs in the middle of the night.” The problem is, Juarez is less than romantic.  Juarez is one of the world’s deadliest cities, with thousands of unsolved deaths a year, mostly women who were on their way to and from work.

MAC has been getting a lot of flack for the new collection, and rightfully so if I may say.  Glamorizing a city known for the rape and murder of thousands of women a year (6,000 so far THIS YEAR) is irresponsible.  But let’s not bash MAC too soon.  In a statement released to blog Temptalia, a MAC spokesperson says:
